Among the suppliers on display at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow was a company whose components rarely get seen but rarely get replaced either. UMBRAGROUP, headquartered in Foligno, Italy, has spent more than 50 years turning precision mechanical motion into a business that now touches commercial aircraft, defense platforms, and space programs worldwide.

UMBRAGROUP’s Roots
The company started in 1972, when Umbra Cuscinetti was founded as a joint venture between Italian public company GEPI and German bearing manufacturer FAG to produce ball bearings. But it didn’t stay as a bearings company for long; shortly after launch, the team introduced recirculating ball screws for aeronautical applications, a product line that pushed the company into the leadership position it still holds today.

A pivotal moment occurred in 1993, when Valter Baldaccini led a management buyout that took the company independent, setting the course for the enterprise it would become. Baldaccini, a mechanical engineer by training, built the business around a set of values the company still references as FIRST. His son, Antonio Baldaccini, has served as CEO since 2014, carrying his father’s vision into a new phase of growth.

Today, the group organizes its aerospace and defense work around the commercial aviation, defense, and space markets.
On the commercial side, its ball screw, electromechanical actuators, and gearboxes supply flight control functions like flap and slat actuation. In defense, the company’s components extend into more demanding territory, including thrust vectoring and hypersonic applications, where the mechanical tolerances and reliability requirements are unforgiving.

The company’s Everett facility has opened new business for UMBRAGROUP. Positioned near Boeing’s factory, the plant has built a working relationship with Boeing rooted in geographic advantage as much as engineering.
